Directions game changers.

August 2012 is the projected completion of the Western Wake Expressway (a toll road extending I-540 through Apex to Holly Springs) including an interchange with US64W about 3.5 miles west of the neighborhood.  It will be the preferred route to approach Apex from the north or west maximizing limited access highways (connecting with Interstate-40, US 70, NC 54, and a direct, quick, easy route to the RDU International Airport).  The Western Wake Expressway (map-1-simple, map-2-complex) is a component of the Triangle Expressway.

(Sidebar: Decades-old I-440/I-40 circles metro Raleigh; the operational larger-half-circled, non-toll I-540 begins west of Raleigh at I-40 near RDU International Airport, goes north around Raleigh and terminates at US64/US264 east of Raleigh.  The soon to the soon-to-be completed I-540 extension (Western Wake Freeway) through Apex and Holly Springs will be a toll road.  Not even the route has been determined to connect I-540 at Holly Springs to I-40 east of Garner/south of Raleigh.)

NC Hwy 55 through traffic will be minimized when the Western Wake Expressway is completed to I-40 south of Raleigh.  The Western Wake Expressway roughly parallels NC Hwy 55 west of NC Hwy 55.

East-west NC Hwy 55 runs north-north-west to south-south-east (effectively runs north-south) through the Town of Apex and western Wake County.

The Town of Apex plan is that the Apex Peakway will encircle downtown Apex intersecting NC Hwy 55/Williams Street south of downtown just north of US1 (near the Candlewoods Suites) and intersecting NC Hwy 55/Williams Street north of downtown (between the US post office and Beaver Creek Commons and other popular shopping centers.) (map-3-simple, map-4-complex)

Directions here have changed several times as new segments of the Apex Peakway were completed.

To avoid a grade-level railroad track to enter our neighborhood, you must use an westbound segment of circular Apex Peakway or eastbound US HWY 64.  Those are the ones given here first.  Other efficient ways to reach our neighborhood depends on your location: one is "eastbound" Apex Peakway from the traffic signal on N. Salem Street (crossing a seldom used grade-level RR track.)  Another is via a NO-LEFT-TURN intersection at Hunter Street and Ambergate Station: one must approach on westbound Hunter Street to enter our neighborhood and/or exit the neighborhood on westbound Hunter Street.

Using the Apex Peakway is the easiest and safest route!
